Synopsis

Serval Storyworks, on behalf of Fur the More, is accepting short-story submissions for its furry charity anthology, “Speaking Easy: Whispered Tales” (referred to as “Whispered Tales” going forward). “Whispered Tales” is themed to match the Fur the More 9: Furries and Fedoras convention, which is centered about the 1920’s.

Theming

All stories must feature anthropomorphic animal characters, but they need not be the only characters. Stories must be, at most, rated PG-13 or the equivalent. If you have concerns about content you are presenting, please ask before submitting a story!

For more information about the PG-13 rating, please visit the link below:

Parental Guide – PG-13 Movie Rating

https://www.parentalguide.org/movie-ratings/pg-13/

Authors must use theming associated with the “Furries and Fedoras” theme of the convention, which likely leans heavily on the feel of the 1920’s in terms of feel, technology, culture, &c.

Disallowed Content
Racism, sexism, discrimination, or other bigotry presented in a positive light.
Erotic or sexual content of any kind (note that lightly suggestive content may be acceptable).
Pedophilia or sex with characters under the age of 18 presented in a positive light.
Rape, torture, dubious consent, forced seduction presented in a positive light.
Snuff or Necrophilia presented in a positive light.
Bestiality presented in a positive light.
Other content not in keeping with the PG-13 rating, subject to the editors’ review.
Payment
If an author’s story is accepted, they will not be receiving any material goods or payment for their story submissions. These stories are being donated to the anthology to support the current charity for the convention of publication. Instead, authors will receive a donation receipt with a valuation of their story. The amount received will depend on whether the story is a previously unpublished (new) story, or a reprint.
For new stories, authors will receive a valuation amount based on current SFWA rates at the time of contract issuance. As of this writing, the current SFWA rate for per-word fiction is USD $0.08 cents per word.
For previously published (reprint) stories, authors will receive a valuation amount based on the going market rate of reprints based on a sampling of markets accepting reprints. As of this writing, the current market rate for reprinted per-word fiction is USD $0.02 cents per word.
Formatting
Please use the following rules when formatting your manuscripts for submission:
Submit a cover page with the following information: Title, Author, Word Count, Content or Trigger Warnings, and Synopsis (Optional).
Use a serif typeface (Times New Roman, Courier New, Century, etc.) set to at least 12 point size.
Use margins 1” width all around.

All submissions should be saved in Microsoft Word format (either *.doc or *.docx). When submitting, please send an email to [email protected]. Please be sure to use the “[FED]” tag in your e-mail subject, without the quotes. Otherwise, your e-mail may not be properly processed, and your submission may not be reviewed.
